Dlouhá zima oddálila jaro co mohla a až Velikonoce je rovnou proměnily v horké léto, proto taky rašení révy začalo později než obvykle. Velké teplo, které trvalo od dubna až do června, způsobilo, že kvetení révy proběhlo už koncem května a hrozny se tak vytvořily nezvykle brzo.

Červenec měl sice teploty více méně normální, ale zato srážek bylo hodně málo. Obavy z velkého sucha přerušily až v polovině srpna deště, při kterých během dvou dní napršelo 100mm srážek, což je víc než za tři předcházející měsíce dohromady. I přes vysoké srážky, se neobjevily žádné choroby a pokračování výjimečně horkého počasí nás hnalo do zahájení sklizně v termínu, který jsme ještě nikdy nezažili.

Začali jsme už 26. srpna a jako obvykle šel první Pinot Gris a společně s ním hrozny na sekt. Horké dny a teplém noci nás nutily pokračovat co nejrychleji, aby nám v hroznech zůstalo dost kyselin a svěžesti. A tak poslední Riesling šel domů už 4.řijna. Úroda se nakonec ukázala výrazně vyšší než jsme očekávali a vinobraní nejrychlejší co jsme kdy dělali.  

I přes letošní extrémní počasí, byly všechny hrozny naprosto zdravé a plné chuti. Ročník 2018 se nám ukazuje jako výjimečný pro červená vína. Merlot a Cabernet Sauvignon nás moc příjemně překvapily. Cuvée Bernety z letošního roku bude tak jedno z nejlepších jaké jsme kdy udělali.

Budburst came later than usual due to a colder-than-average Easter period.  After Easter, it seemed as if we went directly from winter to summer without a spring, thanks to the unseasonably warm weather that started in the second half of April and continued into May and June.  This means that flowering and fruit set came early. July in the South Moravia region of the Czech Republic is usually very wet, however this year, it was much drier-than-normal. In fact, from May to July, we had a drought, which believe it or not, actually saved us.

In the middle of August, we experienced a huge downpour of rain over 2 days.  In just one weekend, we had more rain that the previous three months combined, around 100mm.  Normally after such a wet period, we would have terrible problems with fungal diseases. However thanks to the drought, these diseases never got started in the vineyard, and never took hold after the rain. After this extremely wet period, August continued with a heat wave which lead to an unprecedented early harvest on the 26th of August.

For us, this was the fastest and shortest harvest season on record.  We started by harvesting Pinot Gris and the varieties for sparkling wine.  The hot days and warm nights lead to a challenging situation. The race was on to pick the grapes in time to retain the freshness from natural acidity.

Even despite a severe green harvest, we had a higher-than-expected yield, with perfectly healthy grapes.  The last variety harvested was Riesling, which ended on 4th October.

The 2018 vintage was characterized by ripe, healthy grapes that were full of flavour.  This year will prove exceptional for our red varieties: Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which means our Bernety cuvee will be one of best of all time. In the land dominated by aromatic white wines, 2018 will go down in history as a year for long-lived red wines.
